And soft and the air across my toes was cool. my drive was long but to the right, but david said being right wasn't bad on this hole because of all of the trees on the left. his drive was perfect. "you got your game back, " i said. "more beer, " he said. i looked down at the creek as we crossed the bridge, and then out over the course. "this is nice, " i said. "do you want to play next weekend? i'll drive and maybe you could show me another course?" "if you don't go sailing, " he said. i was pretty sure i wouldn't. "my ex said i don't know how to talk to people." "who does?" he said. i got out and grabbed my five iron. "i've barely talked to anyone outside of work since i got here, " i said. "yeah, it's like that, " he said. "the first year is rough when you move alone. the trick is to figure out that it doesn't say anything about you." "i don't know if i can get used to snakes as thick as my arm." he smiled at me. "no snakes in minnesota?" "oh sure, but they're reasonable, " i said. "you'll get used to them. i don't really think about them at all." he stopped at my ball. "i hope so, " i said. david drove to his ball and i stood there, barefooted, while he hit. i remembered how much carina wanted to be around me when she first got to minnesota. she'd lived in phoenix her whole life and she told me that her first day in rochester was twenty two below zero. she thought all our cars were electric because she kept seeing them plugged in to buildings and garages. i wondered how it felt looking out and seeing electric cars everywhere.
